Today in writing seminar we were talking about being a genius, and what makes someone a genius over someone else. The play we’re reading has this 13 year old girl who brings up all these complex concepts, and her ancestors in the future don’t really know about them, so we’re talking about if the girl, Thomasina is actually a genius or if she’s not because no one knows about her discoveries in the future. ALL, I KID YOU NOT ALL, the men in my class said that she wasn’t a genius because she didn’t do anything important. Then this girl in my class raised up the point that given the time she was living in, it was really hard for women to be taken seriously as scientists, so that could have prevented her from reaching her full potential, but she is still a genius. Then ALL THE MEN AGAIN, said that if she were a genius the time she was living in wouldn’t matter and she would’ve been published and been up there with the likes of Newton and Einstein. Ugh NO, THE TIME DOES MATTER.
On a completely different note, I thought I wrote a really good essay, and my professor handed it back with comments saying my sentence structure was so poor that he couldn’t even understand what I was arguing. But I re-read my essay, and I still don’t see the problem with it… I feel like maybe he’s just picky, but what if I’m just soo shitty at writing that I don’t even recognize the problem, and THAT’S my problem haha.
